George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation
In this special Thanksgiving edition of our podcast we consider how the first national day of thanksgiving ever held in the United States of America came to be. We also read the full proclamation made by President Washington, which he issued in response to a request from the first congress—the same congress that approved the first amendment—that he appoint “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging, with grateful hearts, the many signal favors of Almighty God”….
Washington’s proclamation states, in part,
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor….
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be….
Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.
